Performance and Development History:
The PHASOR RAST once again sets new standards in all flight areas of a double-skin paraglider. Particularly, the excellent takeoff, flight, and gliding characteristics during both fast and slow flying demonstrate the overall performance. It can be flown very sportily but also enjoys slow cruising, always with a high safety margin due to the chosen profile strut and RAST valves.
We placed great importance on good control properties and high maneuverability. This allows for excellent handling even in weak and tight thermals. The development journey began with a fascination for RAST® paragliders from Swing during the manned flight era. Herry Hoffner, a pioneer in RC paragliding, started collecting experiences with DIY RC paragliders several years ago. His creation, the "RASTY," provided the foundation for the development of the Phasor 2.3. The initial step involved contacting Swing to exclusively integrate their proven RAST® system into our RC sports paragliders. With the contractual approval for the use of RAST®, we embarked on the exciting development of RAST® RC sports paragliders with high aspect ratios.
The goal was to create an RC paraglider that is always gentle and easy to fly during takeoff and various flight phases. It should perform well in normal flight, maintain good gliding performance during acceleration, and exhibit stable control in accelerated flight. To meet these requirements, numerous iterations of cap flow simulations were necessary. The result is a profile strut with six different profiles in the wingspan direction. The use of Nitinol, a shape-stable nickel-titanium alloy with a memory effect, allowed for a perfectly tensioned profile nose, facilitating easier takeoffs. Mini-ribs on the trailing edge significantly improved handling and control. The sail cut, which ultimately determines the design but primarily influences sail tension, was optimized. The latest generation Edelrid Magix Pro Dry lines were used in the construction.
The centerpiece of RAST® paragliders, the RAST® valve, brings many benefits during flight but requires significant effort during development and prototype construction. RAST® paragliders require a larger number of prototypes compared to conventional paragliders. This is because the overall construction and tension distribution are mainly related to the RAST® valve. With a conventional prototype without RAST®, adjustments can be made later. If something is not right with RAST®, intervention is not possible since it is built inside the cell, requiring the construction of an entirely new prototype.
Ultimately, only the ellipsoidal form remained from the "Rasty." New profiles were calculated, and a modern profile strut was created through flow simulation. RAST valves were optimized, and adjustments were made to have a better effect. Changes were made to wing tension and sweep. All rods were constructed using the modern Nitinol system, a nickel-titanium alloy with shape memory. The internal structure was designed for lightweight construction. Through numerous test series, we determined the optimal line lengths and angles of attack for different sections.
Now, dear customers, we have reached our goal with the Phasor 2.3 RAST and can offer it to you here.
