5 Common Mistakes When Charging LiPo Batteries

Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries have become the standard power source for RC aircraft, cars and boats thanks to their excellent power-to-weight ratio. However, they also require proper handling, especially during charging.

Following these five simple rules can significantly reduce the risk of a battery incident.

1. Never leave batteries charging unattended
Even modern chargers cannot eliminate every possible risk. Always supervise LiPo batteries while they are charging.

2. Do not charge damaged or swollen batteries
A swollen or physically damaged battery should be removed from service immediately. Even minor damage can lead to thermal runaway.

3. Use the correct charging program
Always charge LiPo batteries with a quality balance charger using the correct cell count and charging current.

4. Charge on a fire-resistant surface
Avoid charging on wood, carpets or paper. A fire-resistant surface or a dedicated battery safety box provides significantly better protection.

5. Disconnect batteries after charging
Once charging is complete, disconnect the battery from the charger and store it safely.

Regular inspections, correct charging procedures and proper storage will not only improve safety but can also extend the service life of your LiPo batteries.
