The first prototype of the P-51, unveiled in 1941, was already impressive. However, flight testing revealed that the super-sleek aircraft still needed crucial modifications to become a true thoroughbred racehorse. The magic formula was found with the P-51D version, and with it, well-trained pilots could successfully stand up to any opponent thanks to superior performance, armament and range. Even after World War II, thousands of Mustangs remained in service in many nations around the globe - some even until 1980.
